And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked…
What does it mean to be spiritually dead? The death to which Paul refers is not a figure of speech. It is a factual statement about everybody’s spiritual condition outside of Christ. And it is traced to our transgressions and sins. Together the two words cover the active and passive aspects of human wrongdoing. They cover our sins of commission and sins of omission. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
As a result all of us are spiritually dead or alienated from the life of God. Until we come into the fold of the Good Shepherd by faith in Jesus Christ, we are dead in transgressions and sins. I know that’s hard for some people to accept, but that is the clear teaching of Scripture. We are spiritually dead in our sin.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." Ephesians 2:8-9
